Get your mind out of the gutter!! I'm talking about "obedience".
This word is so miliary. "You must, or else!" "I command you!" In fact that is how dog training became popular in the US.
Average people started training their dogs in the same manner that the military trained their dogs for combat. There's a reason why many dogs were weeded out of this program. Most dogs were considered too weak or whimpy and could not withstand the harsh training methods. There's a reason why corporal punishment is no longer allowed in public schools; we should give our dogs the same respect and dignity when training them. We don't send our children off to "obedience" school to learn "commands". We send them to school to get an education so they become a properly socialized, and a well adjusted human in society.
So don't think of bringing your dog to "obedience" school...think of it as necessary education.
"Command" sounds more like a threat than a simple way to communicate. Instead of teaching our dogs "commands", we teach them "cue words".
My training techniques are force-free and hands off. If you are physically manipulating your dog to force them into positions, who's doing all the work? You are! Let your dog think for themselves and engage their brain. Let them figure out what works and what doesn't without the fear of being punished for making a mistake. Reward behaviors you like. Behaviors that are rewarded have been scientifically proven to be repeated. Quit telling your dog what you DON'T want and tell them what you DO want.
